Born in Mexico: the distance between north and south
Life expectancy in Mexico was around 58 in the 1960s and is 75 today. Over the same period fertility fell from above 6.5 children per woman to 1.8. Vaccination campaigns, urbanization, clean water and family planning services all played their part. Today 81 percent of the population lives in cities. Diabetes and obesity are among the main health problems holding back faster gains in life expectancy. Mexico also suffered a marked loss of life expectancy during the pandemic years.
The biggest divide in the country runs between the north and center on one side and the south on the other. In southern states such as Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero, poverty, the difficulty of reaching Indigenous communities with services and low school attendance go together with higher child deaths and more births. The northern border states and the area around Mexico City are better off. Money sent home by relatives working in the United States is part of many families' income. Whether children stay where they were born or move to the city often depends on how far their education takes them.
