Born in Russia: a life expectancy with ups and downs

Life expectancy in Russia was around 68 to 69 in the 1960s. In the years after the Soviet Union broke up, economic turmoil, alcohol and heart disease pushed the average for men below 60 in the mid-1990s, and it recovered in the 2000s. The current average is about 73, so part of the lost years have been regained. The gap between women and men is about ten years, one of the widest in the world.

Fertility was around 2.5 children per woman in the 1960s, fell to a very low 1.2 in the late 1990s, approached 1.7 in the 2010s and is now 1.4. Income and health services in big cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg are far better than in remote regions. Because of the vast geography, reaching a specialist doctor can be hard in small towns and in Siberian settlements. Alcohol consumption, smoking and heart disease are among the leading explanations for early deaths among men.
