Born in Germany: long lives, few births
Life expectancy in West Germany was around 69 in the 1960s and is 81 in reunified Germany today. Universal health insurance, a strong hospital network and rising average incomes supported the increase. Fertility was above 2.5 children per woman in the mid-1960s, fell quickly in the early 1970s and has stayed below the replacement level ever since. Today the figure is 1.4.
Immigration is the main factor that keeps the population from shrinking faster, and a notable share of residents were born abroad or have a migrant background. The gap between East and West was a major topic of debate after reunification in 1990. In the eastern states fertility dropped very low for a while after unification, while the gap in life expectancy largely closed over the years. Today a baby's chances depend more on the family's income and education and on the economic situation of the region. In Germany the type of school a child goes to after primary school is decided early, and the choice is closely tied to the parents' level of education.
