Born in Indonesia: a different start across thousands of islands

Life expectancy in Indonesia was in the early 40s in the 1960s and is 71 today. Over the same period fertility fell from just over five children per woman to 2.1, and the family planning programme that spread in the 1970s deserves much of the credit. Village health centres, vaccination campaigns and a growing road network carried services to remote settlements.

Because the country is made up of tens of thousands of islands, geography directly shapes a baby's life. A child born in Java is relatively close to a hospital, a school and the job market. For a child born in a remote, mountainous region such as Papua, reaching the same services can take days. About 58 per cent of the population lives in cities, and the area around Jakarta is the economic centre. The gap in income and education between urban and rural families shows in many areas, from children's nutrition to how long they stay in school. Vaccination coverage and the share of births attended by skilled health staff have risen markedly in recent decades, but the gaps between islands have not closed.
